Different kind of Steel Plates used in Industry

Steel plates, also known as structural steel plate, are a type of steel that can be cut and molded to develop more intricate products having a wide variety of shapes. These plates of steel are prepared by scrunching several thin layers of steel into one and are generally used to prove stability and toughness to substructures and strengthen large weight units like bridgesBesides steel plates also provide resistance to corrosion and abrasion. They can even be used for general repairs can combat harsh environmental conditions, specifically in river and oceans.

Uses of structural steel

It is used in nuclear power plants, thermal power plants, windmills, and various other energy sectors.

They are used to create turbines, oil and gas wells, electromagnetic shields, and pipelines.

It is also used in various electrical appliances such as refrigerators, microwaves, and washing machines.

Carbon steel plates: These steel plates do not contain many elements of alloy steel. Its thickness ranges from 0.4mm to 80mm and is up to 18 m in length. These plates are generally available in different grades depending upon the carbon content present in them. The amount of carbon content present in it is directly proportional to the strength of the steel, and depending upon the carbon content, it can be classified into low, medium as well as high carbon steel plate.

Here is the table listing the carbon content in these steel plates:

Low carbon steel plate: It has about 0.6% to 0.25% of carbon content. It is also called a mild steel plate.

Medium carbon steel plate: In it, carbon content varies from 0.25% to 0.55%.

High carbon steel plate: C content from 0.55% to 1.0%, also known as hard steel plate.

Uses of carbon steel plate

They are used in shipbuilding: It’s used to make very hard components like blades, cutting tools and enormous machine parts, hot water radiators, industrial castings, and metal lamp posts. It’s also known as ‘cast-iron,’ and it’s the material used for making old fashioned cooking pots.

Stainless Steel SheetThis is a flexible type of steel and is used for a variety of purposes. It widely because of its outstanding resistance to corrosion, durability, and formability; besides, it requires very low maintenance and hence is preferred a lot.

Interestingly stainless-steel shows self-repairing property; thus, it remains almost unaffected by scratches, dark markings, and other abrasions.

It is very ductile and thus can be drawn into wires or attenuated without compromising its durability. Because of this property, it is also used for making cooking utensils.

Abrasion-resistant steel plate: It has a high content of carbon, which increases its toughness, but unlike stainless steel, carbon addition can increase its toughness and hardness, but at the same time, it reduces its strength. So, it is commonly used in conveyors, buckets, dump liners, construction attachments.

High tensile steel or high strength steel plates: The term tensile refers to the force an object can bear before it breaks down. High tensile steel has low doping of carbon in addition to Cr, Mo, Ni, and V. All these support this steel to provide high durability, ductility, and malleability.

Uses of High strength steel plate: They are used in crane construction, making bridges and power plants.
